Install OS X Mavericks application can't be verified

The Install OS X Mavericks application will check the system clock before proceeding.  Since around 2013 the installer has bombed out with the error message

This copy of the Install OS X Mavericks application can't be verified

To work around the error set the system clock to a date around the time Mavericks was released before starting the install process.

The command syntax is

date mmddhhmmyyyy

To set the date to 31st October 2013 12:15

date 103112152013
