QNAP Backup disk not available

Solution

Can not backup to the TimeMachine service on QNap NAS from OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion

After configuring the TimeMachine service on the QNap and selecting the TMBackup share on the OSX client.

Attempting to run Time Machine backup, repeatedly produces a Backup Disk Not Available error.

The problem appears to be related to the Bonjour service advertisement and resolution of hostname.local

To work around the problem use the tmutil console command to set the backup destination using the QNap device IP or FQDN

E.g.

sudo tmutil setdestination -ap afp://TimeMachine@qnas1.mssystems.home/TMBackup

tmutil will prompt for the password, which was configured in Time Maching service on the QNap
