OSX Mountain Lion, Java on Chrome

Solution

On OSX 10.7 (Lion) and 10.8  (Mountain Lion) Chrome will fail to run Java applets.

Since Oracle bought Java from Sun, Oracle no longer support 32 bit Java 6.
Chrome is currently a 32 bit browser and is incompatible with the latest 64 bit Java (7).

Apple support Java 6 but it may be disabled.

See https://support.apple.com/kb/HT5559

To enable Java 6 support on Lion and Mountain Lion, enter the following in Terminal

sudo mkdir -p /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/disabled
sudo mv /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/disabled
sudo ln -sf /System/Library/Java/Support/Deploy.bundle/Contents/Resources/JavaPlugin2_NPAPI.plugin /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin
sudo ln -sf /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Commands/javaws /usr/bin/javaws
