On OSX 10.7 (Lion) and 10.8 (Mountain Lion) Chrome will fail to run Java applets.
Since Oracle bought Java from Sun, Oracle no longer support 32 bit Java 6.Chrome is currently a 32 bit browser and is incompatible with the latest 64 bit Java (7).
Apple support Java 6 but it may be disabled.

To enable Java 6 support on Lion and Mountain Lion, enter the following in Terminal
sudo mkdir -p /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/disabledsudo mv /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/disabledsudo ln -sf /System/Library/Java/Support/Deploy.bundle/Contents/Resources/JavaPlugin2_NPAPI.plugin /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.pluginsudo ln -sf /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Commands/javaws /usr/bin/javaws
